FIGURE OF SPEECH

 Hello Readers. On this blog, I will explain about Figure Of Speech. 

A figure of speech is a word or phrase that possesses a separate meaning from its literal definition. It can be a metaphor or simile, designed to make a comparison. It can be the repetition of alliteration or the exaggeration of hyperbole to provide a dramatic effect.

Figure Of Speech :

1. Alliteration

Definition : 

The repetition of the initial consonant sound of consecutive or near consecutive words for effect. Alliteration is also referred to as head rhyme or initial rhyme.

Example : 

  • Fred fried frogs legs on friday
  • Blue baby bonnets bobbed through the bayou

2. Anaphora

Definition : 

Anaphora is a technique where several phrases or verses begin with the same words or words. 

Example : 

  • I came, I saw, I conquered. -Julius Caesar
  • With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right. - Abraham Lincoln.

3. Assonance 

Definition : 

Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds (not just letters) in words that are close together. The sounds don't have to be at the beginning of the word.

Example : 

  • A - For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named lenore. (poe)
  • O - Oh hear old triton blow his wreathed horn. (wordsworth)

4. Euphemism

Definition : 

Euphemism is a mild, indirect, or vague term that often substitutes a harsh, blunt, or offensive term.

Example : 

  • Economical with the truth instead of liar.
  • Letting you go instead of firing you

5. Hyperbole

Definition : 

Hyperbole uses exaggeration for emphasis or effect.

Example :

  • She is older than dirt.
  • I could do this forever.

6. Irony 

Definition : 

Irony occurs when there's a marked contrast between what is said and what is meant, or between appearance and reality.

Example :

  • A traffic cop gets suspended for not paying his parking tickets. (Situational Irony)
  • Naming a tiny Chihuahua Brutus. (Verban Irony)

7. Methapor

Definition : 

A metaphor makes a comparison between two unlike things or ideas.

Example :

  • Heart of stone 
  • The world is a stage

8. Onomatopoeia

Definition : 

Onomatopoeia is the term for a word that sounds like what it is describing.

Example :

  • Whoosh
  • Oink

9. Oxymoron

Definition : 

An Oxymoron is two contradictory terms used together. 

Example :

  • Kosher ham
  • Sweet shrimp

10. Personification

Definition : 

Personification gives human qualities to non-living things or ideas.

Example :

  • The fog crept in
  • The wind howled

11. Simile

Definition : 

A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using the words 'like' or 'as'.

Example :

  • Eats like a pig
  • Like peas in a pod

12. Synecdoche

Definition : 

Synecdoche occurs when a part is represented by the whole or, conversely, the whole is represented by the part.

Example :

  • Coke - any cola drink
  • Wheels - a car

13. Understatement

Definition : 

An understatement occurs when something is said to make something appear less important or less serious.

Example :

  • It was interesting - referring to a bad or difficult experience
  • It's just a scratch - referring to a large dent

Example Figure of Speech in Songs

  • You were romeo, I was a scarlet letter (Taylor Swift / Metaphot)
  • I've got the eye of the tiger (Katty Perry / Idiom)
  • Half of my heart is in havana ooh na na (Camila Cabello / Hyperbole)
  • My love is just like a rose it my be beautiful now (Rose / Simile)
  • And the ones we hail, are the worst of all (Imagine Dragons / irony)
